A seawall is your waterfront’s first line of defense against erosion. When it starts to fail, the soil behind it washes out fast, and a small, affordable repair can quickly turn into a major replacement. The key is catching problems early.
Here are the seven warning signs every waterfront owner should watch for.
1. Leaning or bowing
If your seawall is tilting toward the water or bowing outward, the pressure behind it is winning. This is one of the clearest signs that the wall needs attention now.
2. Cracks in the cap
Hairline cracks are common, but widening cracks in the concrete cap signal structural movement underneath.
3. Sinkholes or depressions in the yard
When you see dips, holes or soft spots in the ground behind the wall, it usually means backfill is escaping through the wall, a serious red flag.
4. Gaps between panels or sections
Visible gaps let soil and water move freely, accelerating erosion behind the wall.
5. Rust stains or exposed rebar
Rust streaks or exposed reinforcement indicate the wall’s internal structure is corroding.
6. Standing water or erosion at the base
Pooling water and washed-out areas at the toe of the wall point to drainage and stability problems.
7. The wall is simply old
Even a well-built seawall has a lifespan. If yours is decades old and showing any of the above, an inspection is worth it.
Don’t wait for failure
Early seawall repairs cost a fraction of a full replacement. If you’ve noticed any of these signs, request a free inspection and estimate, we’ll give you an honest assessment of whether repair or replacement makes the most sense.
